Drogin found out that not only 65% of hourly employees were women but also 33% of salaried managers constituted women. So at both the point women earned less than man. Charges have been made that older workers are laid off to bring in younger and cheaper employees. Some 40 lawsuits accuse Wal-Mart of a failure to pay overtime. ?It pulls wages and benefits down in other grocery stores. It lowers area standards. In some cases, it forces the closure of better paying firms. Though, he tried to avoid from coming since an oracle prophesized that he’ll be delayed long in returning home if he went, but Palamedes placed his son in front of the plough which forced him to go. Just before the war begun, he accompanied Menelaus and Palemedes in an attempt to negotiate Helen’s peaceful return. This dislikable attribute of his causes him to abandoned his comrades and even pray that the Trojans will slaughter them, all because he has been insulted at the hands of his commander, Agamemnon. Like most Homeric characters, Achilles does not develop significantly over the course of the epic; his state of mind is constantly fluctuating between where his rage is being directed all through the book. Although the death of Patroclus prompts him to seek reconciliation with Agamemnon, it does not lessen his rage, but instead redirects it toward Hector. The event does not make Achilles a more deliberative or self-reflective character. Though his mind is filled with grief and despair over his friend’s death, this only helps fuel his bloodlust, wrath, and pride that continue to consume his mind throughout the epic. He mercilessly mauls his opponents, their bodies filling the river Xanthus, angering the god, which Achilles’ shamelessly takes no note to. He immorally desecrates the body of Hector, and savagely sacrifices twelve Trojan men at the funeral of Patroclus. He does not relent in this brutality until the final book of the epic, when King Priam, begging for the return of Hector’s desecrated corpse, appeals to Achilles’ memory of his father, Peleus. Yet it remains unclear whether a father’s heartbroken pleas really transformed Achilles, or whether this scene merely testifies to Achilles’ acceptance of the god’s words, as he had previously, before Priam’s arrival, been told by Zeus that his morning and defiling of Hectors body was enough. Achilles has a strong sense of social order that in the beginning, manifests itself in his concern for the disorder in the Achaian camp; a deadly plague is destroying the soldiers, and Achilles wants to know the reason why. His king, Agamemnon, will not act, so Achilles decides to act: He calls for an assembly of the entire army. In doing this, Achilles upsets the order of protocol; only Agamemnon can decide to call an assembly, but Achilles does so to try to return order to the Achaian camp. He succeeds, partially. He finds out why the plague is killing hundreds of Achaian soldiers, but in the process, he creates disorder when it is revealed that Agamemnon is responsible for the deadly plague. Thus, Achilles’ attempt to return order to the Achaian camp does little, ultimately, to establish order. Apollo lifts the plague, but after Achilles withdraws himself and his troops from the Achaian army, disorder still remains among the Achaians. Agamemnon, of course, is as guilty of creating the ensuing disorder as Achilles is, but Achilles seems petulant and argumentative. He is undermining the little harmony that does exist. In his argument that Agamemnon receives all the best war prizes and does nothing to earn them, Achilles forgets the valuable prizes that he has received. His rage even causes him to almost attempt to kill Agamemnon, but the goddess Athena saves him from this deed. It should be noted that Achilles does not leave the Achaian army without sufficient reason: Agamemnon demanded to have the maiden Briseis, Achilles’ war prize, and Achilles saw this act as a parallel to Paris’ kidnapping of Helen — he sees himself in the same position as Menelaos. Consequently, the quarrel between himself and Agamemnon is as righteous to him as is the war against the Trojans. But even after Agamemnon offers to return Briseis, along with numerous other gifts, Achilles remains angry, indicating that one of Achilles’ major character flaws is his excessive pride. The gifts that Agamemnon offers do not compensate for the public affront, the public insult Achilles believes he has suffered. A concern for gifts, the reader realizes, is far less important to Achilles than his concern for a proper, honored place in the world. After all, Agamemnon had previously given gifts and then taken them back. He could do so again, so the promise of more gifts is possibly an empty promise. This idea of social status is in keeping with the heroic code by which Achilles has lived, but in his isolation, he comes to question the idea of fighting for glory alone because â€Å"A man dies still if he has done nothing. † The idea developing in Achilles’ mind is that the concept of home (or family) and the individual are both important to society and to a heroic warrior. (Hektor is the embodiment of this view. Some critics see these ideas slowly developing through Achilles’ ability to relate to others on a personal basis, as he does with Patroklos, and as he does in his guest-host relationship with the ambassadors from Agamemnon. However, it is only after Patroklos’ death that these relationships and broader concepts of love begin to become significant for Achilles. Ironically, with the death of Pa troklos, Achilles begins to see life and relationships with other people from a mortal point of view, and at the same time, he is drawing ever closer to the divine aspects of love. He has an obligation to avenge Patroklos’ death, and he realizes his own shortcomings as Patroklos’ protector. He also sees that his sitting by his ships is â€Å"a useless weight on the good land,† something that is causing the deaths of many Achaian warriors. Unfortunately, however, Achilles is unable to see that the Achaians feel his withdrawal as keenly as he now feels the loss of Patroklos. It is Achilles’ anger, whether he is sulking or whether he is violent, this state of mind is paramount throughout most of the epic. Achilles’ violence closes with the death of Hektor and with Achilles’ mutilation of Hektor’s corpse. By now, under Zeus’ firm hand, the gods have moved from their own state of disorder to order. When the gods see Achilles act without any sense of pity for Hektor or his family, they come back into Zeus’ all-wise fold of authority. And eventually, through his mother, Thetis, even Achilles is finally persuaded to acquiesce to Zeus’ will. In the end, Achilles is exhausted. His passions are spent, and he consents to give up Hektor’s corpse.

However, I also noted at there is a definition of it as a verb meaning â€Å"to move swiftly.† As a result, I’m wondering if use of â€Å"clip† as a noun has taken on this meaning so that an adjective is no longer necessary. Clip has more than one meaning, both as a noun and as a verb. The verbs came before the nouns. The verb that gives us the â€Å"holding on† sense of clip derives from the Old English verb, clyppan: â€Å"to clasp with the arms, to embrace, or to hug.† From this verb we get nouns with the following meanings: clip: an embrace or a hug (now obsolete) clip: a device that grips objects tightly. Examples of this kind of clip are: hair clips, bicycle clips, a potato chip bag clip, etc. A synonym is clamp. clip: a receptacle containing several cartridges held together at the base for insertion bodily into the magazine of a repeating firearm. clip: a piece of jewelry that may be clipped onto clothing. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Research Paper Example Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Paper Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Paper Essay Topic: Claim Of Fact Literature The Beast in the Jungle Dahls Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is an unusual piece of literature; accepted by children and adults alike today as an exciting fantasy world, though originally criticised as racist, politically incorrect and immoral. Todays revision of the novel has therefore been adapted for a racially aware society. Nevertheless, it can still be seen as akin to a communist fantasy world; the Oompa Loompas are all equal and work for the common good, and the children (with the exception of Charlie, the underdog who ultimately benefits from the dictator- like figure Willy Wonka) are symbols of capitalism, such as the gluttonous Augustus Gloop and the spoilt Veruca Salt, who come to their end through sadistic or extreme1 retribution. The novel, therefore, appears to combine in the microcosm of the chocolate factory the religious- based ethics and retributive justice portrayed in Victorian morality plays with a communist style dictatorship reminiscent of Marxs ultimate utopia. The analogy of the factory as a symbol of communism, a criticism directed at Dahls other novels such as James and the Giant Peach,2 is prevalent throughout the book. Charlies father Mr Bucket, for example, is the epitome of the poor worker in a capitalist system; however hard he worked. he] was never able to buy one half of the things that so large a family needed. 3 When the competition is announced, Grandpa George declares that the people who will win the tickets are the ones who can afford to buy bars of chocolate every day;4 in other words, children in stereotypically capitalist families. The criticism of capitalism is reinforced as the children are revealed as representing some of the seven deadly sins; Augustus Gloop is gluttonous, Ver uca Salt is avaricious, Violet Beauregarde is prideful, and Mike Teavee, A boy who does nothing but watch television, is slothful. In contrast, as Cassandra Pierce notes, Charlie shows a complete lack of these characteristics;5 poor, hungry, and refusing to eat his grandparents food. When he wins the factory at the end of the novel, it not only represents the triumph of the righteous being over the unholy who have gone to be cleansed, but also symbolises the rise to power of the poor overturning the rich, as Marx predicted. In addition to this, Willy Wonka is represented as a dictator with sinister undertones that many readers fail to realise. As Stalin and Lenin did, for example, he restricts freedom of speech, refusing to listen to complaints or questions. For example when Mike Teavee asks why Wonka makes gum in his factory if he thinks it is so disgusting, Wonka replies I do wish you wouldnt mumble. 6 This is repeated throughout the book with Wonka claiming that he is a little deaf in my left ear7 and telling the children Dont argue. Its such a waste of precious time! 8 Furthermore, the chocolate factory is used as a metaphor for the corrupt communist system whose government holds monopolies over the people. For example, Grandpa Joe describes how the chocolates have become more fantastic and delicious. and nobody] else is able to copy it,9 and later implies that the competition is merely a ploy to earn more money because The whole world will be searching for those Golden Tickets. Hell sell more than ever before! 10 Though this is a criticism of corrupt communist systems, however, in reality it is a feature of capitalist systems with companies such as Microsoft accused of having monopolies over computer systems, and media moguls such a s Rupert Murdoch in effect controlling freedom of speech. Additionally, his treatment of the Oompa- Loompas is questionable. This is particularly true of the original version of Charlie and the Chocolate factory which was criticised by writers such as Eleanor Cameron. Her primary concern was the Oompa- Loompas, who were originally African Pygmies working for a wage of cacao beans, singing songs akin to war chants, and allowing themselves to be experimented on like laboratory animals by Wonka. Though it didnt occur to me that my depiction of the Oompa- Loompas was racist,11 Dahl revised the book in sympathy with the NAACP and other critics to create dwarves with rosy white skin and funny long hair who came from Loompaland. 12 This was further revised in 1971 for the film to green- haired, orange skinned midgets, rendering it as politically- correct as possible and through doing so altering images created without malicious intent. If taken as racist creations, however, Dahls portrayal of Wonka is akin to Hitler, who also experimented on the disabled; rendering the novel surreal,13 disturbing and macabre. 14 The critics of Dahls work, however, often read too much into what really appears to be an exciting, magical fantasy world. For example, Wonka is more of a father than slave- master to the Oompa- Loompas, saving them from thick jungles infested by the most dangerous beasts in the world,15 and finding it very sad16 that one of the volunteers who drank Fizzy Lifting Drinks disappears forever; written perhaps, as Pierce suggests, in response to Lois Kulb Bouchards comment that a Black man floats away to his death stupidly silent, and no one among his family or friends misses him. Though some have tried to read racism into Dahls other works such as the originally black- skinned Fleshlumpeater in The BFG, and sexism in his portrayal of women such as Trunchball in Matilda, his creations are probably nothing more than fantasy figures; white males, such as Matildas father, receive similar treatment. Therefore the treatment of Dahls novel is akin to what Jeremy Clarkson bemoans about todays society- that it is too politically correct; for example calling Siamese twins conjoined twins. It is possible to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a Victorian morality play not only in setting with the great iron gates18 and huge chimneys reminiscent of an English factory during the Industrial Revolution, but also in message with Wonka summing up the moral of the story in the final few pages, telling Charlie that I want a good sensible loving child. 19 It is also possible to see is as an analogy of a corrupt communist dictatorship with the evil dictator gradually disposing of those he dislikes; thereby bringing relevance by comparison with todays international politics. Though it is interesting to read subtleties such as these into the plot, however, it is likely that it is possible to read them into any fictional novel. I would prefer to continue to read it as a magical novel that inspired my imagination from childhood onwards, written with no racist malice or cruel intent.
